Apply to Pre-College

Applicants must demonstrate appropriate academic credentials for enrollment in university-level programs and undergraduate courses.

Transcripts should indicate strong academic performance in advanced and college preparatory courses in core subjects such as mathematics, sciences, English and the humanities. Applicants will also be required to demonstrate maturity and readiness for a college experience on an urban campus, as indicated by their personal statement and letter of recommendation.

The Pre-College application for Summer 2024 is now open. Please note the following application deadlines:

Application Process

1. Go to the Application Homepage and create an account to begin a new application.  Choose the following in order to apply as a Pre-College student:

  • What type of program are you applying to? Non-Degree
  • School: Summer & Non-Degree Programs
  • Field of Study: Pre-College
  • Degree: Non-Degree
  • Concentration: Not Applicable
  • Term: Summer 2024

2. Complete the remainder of the application with the following information:

  • Personal Information
  • Program Selection (College Intensive, Summer Immersion or Summer Exposure)
  • Session Selection and Course Selection
  • Transcript (uploaded electronically to your application as a PDF). 
  • A 350-word maximum Personal Statement (PDF) describing:
    • Why the GW Pre-College program and your course selection?
    • How participation in Pre-College will assist you in achieving your college and career goals?
    • Note: scholarship students will be given different prompts related to their programs
  • Nonrefundable $50 application fee
    • Fee waivers apply for special cohorts (e.g., Caminos al Futuro) and students from sponsored organizations
  • College Intensive ONLY: Recommendation from teacher or guidance counselor (you will need to enter their name, email and organization/institution)
  1. After GW receives all components, your application will be reviewed on a rolling, space-available basis.
  2. Once your application has been reviewed, you will receive an email informing you to view your decision on the Application Portal.

International Students

College Intensive (credit) - Online only for Summer 2024

International students who are currently the equivalent of grade 10 or 11 in the U.S. may apply to our College Intensive programs.

Students should be academically qualified to manage the challenges of university-level work and must demonstrate proof of English language proficiency by meeting the minimum required scores for one of the tests if English is a second language:  

  • Internet-based TOEFL: 80

  • Paper-based TOEFL: 550

  • IELTS: Overall band score of 6.0 and no individual band score below 5.0

Students with TOEFL scores between 550 and 600 (or other equivalents) are required to take one English for Academic Purposes course. Students attending schools where the primary language of instruction is English are not required to submit TOEFL. We ask that students submit an unofficial copy of test scores with their application.

Summer Immersion (noncredit)

International students who are currently enrolled in the equivalent of grades 9-11 (ages 14-17) in the U.S. may apply to our Summer Immersion programs.

Summer Immersion applicants must meet English proficiency. 

Application Process - International Students

  1. Create a PIN and password to access the online application. It is important to keep this information as it will allow you to log in and check the progress of your application.
  2. Submit the online application, which includes:
  • Personal information and course selection
  • A 350-word Personal Statement (PDF) describing:
    • Why the GW Pre-College program and course selection?
    • How participation will assist you in achieving your college and career goals?
  • Transcript (uploaded electronically as a PDF document)
  • Unofficial copy of TOEFL, IELTS or approved GW language test scores (if English is a second language)
  • $50 nonrefundable application fee
    • Fee waivers may apply for special cohorts and students from sponsored organizations
  • College Intensive ONLY: Recommendation from teacher or guidance counselor
  1. After GW receives all components, your application will be reviewed on a rolling, space-available basis.
  2. Once your application has been reviewed, you will receive an email and a letter informing you of the decision.
